Back to Hawthorn Historic Plaques

The corner store was built for Charles S. Fysh in 1869, the Hawthorn Tea Warehouse Company. The north corner was part of the original Methodist Church grant of land in the Village Reserve, but the Methodists established a church nearer the centre of Hawthorn and this block was sold. Fysh had previously run the Hawthorn Tea, Grocery, Ironmongery, Oil and Color Warehouse on the south corner opposite from 1861. He also sold dairy products, timber and later wine and spirits. The store was taken over by William Tate in 1873. It is the oldest building in the intersection and the shopping centre.
