Patrick O'Brien was the first Hawthorn magistrate, later Chairman of magistrates, Member of Parliament 1853-1859 and Knight of St. Gregory. He lived on the top of the hill in a house with a tower and 16 acres, where the road, (sometimes known as O'Brien's Lane), once ended, from circa 1856. The property known as "Kinkora" stretched down to Glenferrie Road. In 1877 he built a second house further west, also known as "Kinkora". The Kew railway line was cut through the property, the road crossing it by a bridge and continuing to Glenferrie Road, bending around the old home, when the estate was subdivided in 1888. The first "Kinkora" was demolished; the second was extended into a block of flats, but has recently been restored.
