The east side of Yarra Street towards the river was John Treacy's tannery in the mid 1850s, later acquired by Robert Flockhart after the trainline cut across the property in 1860. George Johnson, architect, bought part of the property and built a house in 1869. He was on the Hawthorn Council 1870-1873. His best known buildings include the Collingwood Town Hall and the Old Colonists' Homes. The house was later owned by Robert Short.
