Back to Hawthorn Historic Plaques

This house, facing Power Street, was built probably in 1865, for Thomas Tyson, Hawthorn Councillor 1866-9. It was perhaps designed by Charles Webb to whom it was mortgaged still in 1869. The land was once part of Thomas Brooks' farm. The house was polychromatic patterned brickwork. Next door, Hawthorn Grammar School was established by Postle in 1865, becoming a leading private school. John Meeson, a later headmaster, acquired this house in 1874 presumably for his house or a boarding house. Professor Martin Irving (1831-1912), the first professor of Classics at Melbourne University in 1855, took over Hawthorn Grammar in 1875, increasing it in size and standing (with 75 boarders in 1877). He was also a Member of Hawthorn Council 1877-9. Edward Irving, his son, took over the administration of the school in 1884, and part of the grounds behind west along Grove Road were sold and subdivided. The house was altered into flats, and blocks build around it and a new house in its front garden.
