Fletcher's Hotel was probably the first building actually built on the crossroads, the forerunner of Glenferrie shopping centre. The hotel was a two-storeyed iron building, probably built circa 1854 for George Fletcher on land purchased from the Liddiard estate. It was a landmark in the district and one of the four hotels where public meetings were held in September 1860 to select a Municipal Committee to organise the separation of Hawthorn from the rest of Boroondara.
The Hawthorn Town Hall is built on part of the original hotel property, then owned by James Clinton. The hotel was renamed the Langham Hotel and rebuilt with a bank and shops designed by James Gall in 1891, but only the terrace row of shops facing Glenferrie Road with carriage entrance to the hotel yard remains.
