Back to Hawthorn Historic Plaques
"Summerlee" was built for Dugald McDougall of Sands and McDougall perhaps in 1865, although he had been a Hawthorn resident since 1860. He was on the Hawthorn Council between 1860-1867, becoming Chairman in 1862/3. He was a leading Presbyterian Church Member. The house was leased between c1869 and 1880. It was extended in 1882/3, 3 years before his death. It was offered "for sale as a first class residence with nearly 3 acres, its situation and surroundings very beautiful", in 1886 with 280 feet frontage to Riversdale Road, and became the home of politician Sir George Turner before the First World War.
