St Joseph's Chapel and School, now an Aged Care Hostel is situated on land granted to the Roman Catholic Church from the Villiage Reserve. The building probably dates from 1858 or 1859, and was used as a school and a chapel, the first Roman Catholic chapel in Hawthorn. Joseph Schott was the first school master, the school funded by the Denomination Board, becoming Capitation School 313 after the Education Act of 1872. It was taken over by the Faithful Companions of Jesus and moved in recent years to the St. Johns School building in Glenferrie Road.
