Comments: Built by Alexander McNeill on the North-Eastern corner of Canterbury and Union Roads, Surrey Hills. Licensed from 28/11/1888.

"His Honour said that in the case of A. McNeill, who applied tor a conditional license for an hotel at Surrey hills, the evidence had been considered, and the same difficulty arose as in other cases, inasmuch as, while the private residents were strongly against it, the townspeople and business people wished to see the hotel built. The balance of the evidence was in favour of those who thought the hotel necessary. The application was granted. In that, as in other cases, it had been suggested that large hotels apparently meant for lodgings were merely erected to acquire a right to sell drink. In some cases there were grounds for suspecting that such was the case. The Court, however, was determined to see that all houses licensed should be not only properly built but furnished as proper dwelling houses, and if they were not kept so the licenses would not be renewed."
