Comments: The Woodman's Arms Hotel was the first hotel to be opened in Kew c.1851, located on the corner of Princess St on the north side of High St. However, by 1858, it had already become a store which, according to James Bonwick, was "a large wooden building... a store and butchery conducted by a thorough energetic and honourable American. It was formerly a hotel, the "Woodman", where wood carters were wont to stop and contemplate an ancient Forester over the door."

Listing in The Argus (12 Jul 1854). |
It is shown in the municipal records of 1863 as Woodman's Store, the owners being Fenwick's executors. Since that time, owners have been numerous, and an early photograph shows it as Nicholas Brothers' Junction Stores and Kew Timber Yard.
