Back to Hawthorn Historic Plaques

It is possible that this house extends a small cottage built in the mid 1840s on Thomas McCarthy's Crown allotment 34. It was acquired by James Connell, one of the pioneer stockholders in the district. He later owned Crown allotment 33 also, from Church Street to Power Street and subdivided both after the Hawthorn Village was subdivided in 1852. He established the Bridge Hotel nearby on the corner of Denham Street. By the 1860s the house had been extended or rebuilt and was later associated with pioneers David Hill and William Palmer.

The house was demolished in 1994, with two townhouses built in its place.
