(Note: Plaque is no longer at this site)

The first Hawthorn Post Office was established here in 1854 under James Pearson, who ran a general store on land belonging to Thomas Power. The Post Office moved further east a few years later and the general store was later licensed, occupied by Patrick Muldowney in the 1870s. It was demolished and incorporated into James Scott's Hawthorn Nursery, a new house build on or near its site for the Scotts, who occupied the nursery until just before the property was subdivided with Domville Avenue circa 1919. Scott was a member of the Hawthorn Municipal Committee, and laid out the public park opposite.
