Comte Alinant de Dollon established a vineyard on his property of about 40 acres between Tooronga and Auburn Roads, at the end of the 1850s. In 1861, it received an Honourable Mention in a competition organised by the Argus. The vineyard presumably used water from Gardiner's Creek or rainwater collected in underground tanks, and the arrival of mains water in Hawthorn in the mid 1860s might have reduced the local market. The vineyard became the property of George Carlton in 1874. Later proposals to subdivide the property were fairly unsuccessful and part was acquired by the Cooperative Brick Works and quarried for clay for brickmaking.
