Back to Hawthorn Historic Plaques

This row of shops was built in 1887 on the Launder Estate, owned by the Australian Property and Investment Company, the first long terrace raw built in Hawthorn. One, (once No. 306, now 434) was used as the first fixed meeting place for the first local Guides, registered in England as a Baden Powell group, probably the first in Australia. The meeting was advertised in the local paper in February 1911, Captain Louie Kerr, "Only girls of good character and respectability will be allowed to join". Gwen Swinburne later was a leader in the movement.
