51 Liddiard Street

Back to Hawthorn Historic Plaques

Liddiard Street was the boundary between Liddiard and Payne property to the north both subdivided in the early 1850s. Farmer Thomas Goodman occupied a large section to Barkers and Glenferrie Roads from 1852. His two storeyed verandah house, with a view across the empty fields around, would have been one of the first houses build in the area, in a style more typical of Tasmanian and New South Wales houses. The house was briefly owned by John B. Sands, printer, John Henry Knight in 1865, Edward Swainsbury 1878, and contractor Henry Goss in 1881, who presumably extended it and build other homes nearby in the new side streets.
