Emma Bartlett Cook established a private school for her own family in 1877, including children from neighbouring families. By 1882, the demand for boarders had grown, and Tintern was established on Glenferrie Road, beside the Presbyterian church, where it remained until 1953, when the school was slowly relocated to East Ringwood. In 1954, the Hawthorn Council purchased the site of the senior school for the development of the art gallery and library. The Junior School relocated in 1956, and was taken over by the Hawthorn Infant Welfare Centre, whilst the Senior School building, built in 1918, became the Hawthorn Peppercorn Club.
