The First City of Camberwell Scout Group was established in 1909 as Imperial Boy Scouts, on the lines of the Boy Scouts Association which had recently been set up in England. By 1912, the group had grown substantially, and when Scouting founder Sir Robert Baden Powell came to Australia and visited Madame Melba (later to be Dame Nellie Melba), the 1st Camberwell Troop were asked to provide a Guard of Honour for the Chief Scout. At this time, Madame Melba was asked if she would be Patron of the Troop, to which she accepted, thus the group were named "Melba's Own".
